No Technical Knowledge Required

Have you ever noticed how techie people love to use acronyms? I once witnessed a back-and-forth “slinging” of acronyms between two techies. Techie 1: “Yeah, I can’t wait to update from a 14.4 to 28.8 kbps modem.” Techie 2: Cool! That would make IRC better to use.” Techie 1: “Really? I kind of like ICQ myself.” (Okay, it was the 90s and the beginning of the “information superhighway,” and way before social media, but you get the idea).

The Internet and computer technology can be pretty intimidating to some business owners who just want to focus on selling products and services. Why concern yourself with Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Search Engine Optimization (SEO), or Business-to-Business (B2B) marketing?

Because if you don’t, you may miss out on some great opportunities. I have seen the Internet grow a hundredfold in both size and complexity. And the amount of acronyms nowadays is humbling even for someone who has worked in computer technology since the inception of the Internet. Social media opened up a whole new world. In marketing terms, how you conduct your business on social media can make or break you, or worse, the number of followers for your business isn’t growing beyond the people you know. That is because you need to have the plan to use social media to sell your company or product. In fact, any business marketing mix will include a website and at least one SM profile, if not several different profiles depending on what target market you are trying to reach. Twitter attracts people other than Facebook or Instagram, and depending on your business, should you also have a presence on Linked In, Pinterest, or TikTok?

To market your business, you want to develop a social media strategy. That is why when running a business today, you must, at the very least, have an online presence and possibly add e-commerce features to your website to sell your product or service in-store or online. If you don’t, you may miss out on some great opportunities that are otherwise relatively easy and economical to implement.

So what can you do to give your business the edge over your competitors?

Having your DOTcom website and setting up your Facebook page is a good start, but it is not enough. It’s not a “you build it, they will come” sort of thing. Imagine the amount of competing web traffic and social media that is intent on reaching the same target market you are. Then there is the time it takes to monitor and respond to emails or messages that most business owners and managers don’t have time for since they are focused on managing the business.

At a minimum, you want to highlight your products, specials, sales, or charity on your website. And if you sell online, you will need to catalogue, photograph, and upload them to your e-commerce site.
